Grief and failure resulted in a much needed mini-vacation.

After the loss of Pepper on March 18th, and my failure to save the life of Rocky, I was feeling pretty down in the dumps. My brother who recently moved from Chico, CA to Los Angeles, CA invited me to come stay at his apartment for 3 days to hang out and relax. He lives in one of those high-rise “luxury” apartments that’s got a pool, spa, gym, and recreational area all up on the roof. Pretty nice place, though not-so great for a large breed dog like Kadan (who I brought along with me). Had to take him up and down the elevator 9 floors every time he needed to use the restroom and he couldn’t roam around freely at all, but we more than made up for it with multiple long walks around downtown while we were there.

All and all it was a very great trip and much needed relaxation. Kadan got to see and play with Jake and my brother’s and his fiance’s new 10 week old Maltese/Poodle mix (I refuse to call it a MALTIPOO. Can’t even begin to describe how much I despise breeders of “designer dogs”). Her name is Maddie. I kinda have to wonder how they plan to housebreak a puppy in a 9th floor apartment. I was really against them even purchasing Maddie in the first place, trying to get them to go to a shelter or rescue instead. But his fiance wanted a “Maltipoo” RIGHT NOW, and found a breeder on Kijiji.com, aka just another online classified littered with backyard breeders galore who are continuing to increase the pet overpopulation problem. Maddie wasn’t even 8 weeks old yet, no shots, no deworming, and she’s essentially mixed breed dog being passed off as an expensive “purebred designer dog” from a profiting backyard breeder that charged them $300. Incredibly stupid move on their part, but they think they got a “really good deal since Maltipoo’s go for $1000’s in the LA area”. Oh man, don’t even get me start. Oh well, what’s done is done. It was their choice, however idiotic it might be.

Here’s a few pictures my brother snapped of the dogs while we were there. Enjoy.

Might be making a trip down to grandma’s soon to visit her. Will be bringing Kadan of course; I’ve never spent a day away from him since I adopted him. Grandma’s always wanting me to work with her Sheltie, Buddy, and the guy she’s renting out her guesthouse to apparently has a little Pekingnese mix that’s driving them both batty with her hyperactive-jump-on-everything behavior. Will have the camera on me for pictures and I’ll be sure to report in how it goes.

  1. Wow that is quite a trio there! The photo of you on the bed reminds me of bedtime in this apartment, only my dogs are a fourth of the size of those you have there! Sorry to hear about Pepper. I just stumbled on your blog, but wanted to say hello to a fellow animal lover, and good luck in your studies! I hope you do get to study zoology eventually!

  2. Katie, The rescue world is extremely tough on animal lovers, you can only save a very small percentage of the dogs that need saving. I admire your efforts and hope you can take some solace in knowing Rocky was very lucky to have a least one person that really cared about him.
