Katie, The rescue world is extremely tough on animal lovers, you can only save a very small percentage of the dogs that need saving. I admire your efforts and hope you can take some solace in knowing Rocky was very lucky to have a least one person that really cared about him.

Yeah, she was definitely one of a kind. She could be such a pain sometimes, but even with her moody Akita attitude and various behavior issues over the years, I’d go through it all again in a heartbeat. She lived a life completely devoted to us. It’s just a shame certain people in my family couldn’t appreciate her in the way I did.

What breed of dogs do you have? I saw you said on the other comment that they’re a lot smaller than mine. Toy breeds?

Oh my, I’m so sorry to read this (and the previous post about Pepper), it’s making me tear up. She seems like she was quite the dog, but it also sounds like she was so lucky that you took her in. She had a nice long life. I hate thinking that one day my 2 dogs will be old and declining. It always makes me sad, not sure how I will deal with it.

Wow that is quite a trio there! The photo of you on the bed reminds me of bedtime in this apartment, only my dogs are a fourth of the size of those you have there! Sorry to hear about Pepper. I just stumbled on your blog, but wanted to say hello to a fellow animal lover, and good luck in your studies! I hope you do get to study zoology eventually!

Oh I know. I was working as a junior trainer with a local obedience instructor when I was 17, and have been volunteer basic obedience training shelter dogs to make them more adoptable since 2006 :) So I have lots of hands-on experience. I’ve just been wanting to attend ABC for more “formal” training and broaden my horizons. When it comes to being a dog trainer, I really want to do it all. All levels of obedience, rally, agility, flyball, and I hope to start learning service dog training in the near future.

It’s basically been something I’ve worked my whole life towards as a starter career, with the end goal being a degree in Zoology with a focus in Animal Behavior :)

Hi, first let me say that it’s great you want to pursue a career in the animal field. That’s the good part, now the bad part. Regardless of what anybody tells you if you become a good dog trainer, it will still take three to five years before you are known well enough to be busy.

And even then there are very few dog trainers that train full time, for most trainers it’s a part time gig. Now if you really have your heart set on dog training, go for it. it’s just going to take a little while.

I have a dog that looks strikingly similar to Bindi. I was told that my Bacardi was a golden retriever/Australian shepherd mix. However I see not retriever in her, I believe her to be the same mix as Bindi; Australian shepherd/border collie mix. I will be doing a DNA test that I got for free though, just out of curiosity.

Your description of Pepper reminds me of our Lab Ender. We had him from 1995 until 2007, and I just didn’t know enough when he was younger to help modify his behavior.
